My Music

About this site

This is the website of the pianist/composer René Torenstra.

The site contains music I have written, original compositions, arrangements, transcriptions and educational material, as well as essays and articles on various musical subjects and information about projects I am working on. It does not contain personal material, blog posts or opinionated articles on anything other than music. If you are interested in such material, or lack thereof, I maintain a small site at c7-c5.nl, where you can find short stories and not much else.

The primary function of this site is to have a place on the web for my music in sheet music form. Most recordings on this site are for instructive purposes and are therefore generated by the computer for uniformity of format and actual representation of the score provided. For real recordings or performances other than those provided here, contact me.

Legal issues

R. Torenstra - inargenti.nl is registered with the Chamber of Commerce in The Hague, Netherlands, registration number 000024255548.

All music on this site is original, either composed or arranged by René Torenstra. For the compositions, arrangements and educational material the copyrights rest with BUMA/STEMRA, who represent R. Torenstra in that capacity. That construction allows you to download and/or print any sheet music without cost, and you are allowed to perform it in private settings. For live performances and recordings the usual construct applies: you report the performance or recording to your local music representative organisation, like BUMA/STEMRA or ASCAP, and they will take steps to see that the composer or arranger gets paid. Note that for live performances, the artist is usually not required to pay anything, just report the set list. Venues that stage live music are required to have a contract with representative organisations and pay an annual fee for the right to offer such live performances.

The transcriptions on this site are just that: an actual notation of sound heard on a record. For the original recordings or copyrighted sheet music one needs to pay; for a transcription one does not. For all transcriptions on this site and the work I have done on them I grant my visitors a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial license, which, in short, allows you to do anything you want with the material, expand on it or derive from it, or publish it for non-commercial use, as long as you credit my work. It does not provide for any commercial uses - for those uses I explicitly reserve my rights. For questions regarding commercial use or publication of the material, please contact me.

In some cases you will see an offer to buy an album, the audio-CD available from amazon.com. These are offered for your convenience, to locate reference recordings or get some inspiration, and in no way is R. Torenstra or inargenti.nl responsible for or affiliated with sales resulting from a visit to inargenti.nl. All sales are handled by Amazon, and there is no surcharge if you buy anything through inargenti.nl. The images of album covers are hosted on amazon.com and are not stored on this site; copyright and legal disclaimers of amazon.com apply in those cases, except where the fair-use policy for such items is applicable.

On November 29 we had the last workshop of the year with members of the MuziekAtelier, and this time it was open for the public to participate and enjoy singing a few well-known songs with us.

Buddy Shank played a rare alto flute solo on the the Mamas and the Papas single "California Dreamin'." I needed it for a project, so here it is if you need it. Note that the key is different from the original and there are very minor changes to keep it more simple. There is nothing remarkable about this solo, although the flat tenth used on the dominant might surprise a few people in the pop scene. The rest of the solo is built on natural and harmonic minor, with use of a blue note here and there.

This is a simple arrangement of the well-known song by the Mamas and the Papas, in lead-sheet form, for use in the MuziekAtelier-projects. There are some slight differences in chords and rhythm, and the key (Ami) is different from the original.

The new theme for the current series of workshops is "Dreaming," so this beautiful piece had to be part of it. This song for the MuziekAtelier projects is an adaptation of a 1934 version of the song "Droomland," originally an American song from 1897.

One Way Commitment
A piece from 1993, One Way Commitment was one of the last pieces I wrote for the SoundScapes-quintet. It was performed live only once, in The Duke in Leiden, because the arrangement was for trumpet and tenor, whereas the line-up at that time was guitar and tenor. The piece starts out with a series of... Read more..
El Gorrion Y La Paloma
This here is the very first piece for ensemble I wrote. So, not too complicated (but right on the clave) with a little bit of fun in the bridge section. My penchant for parallel fourths is again visible here, although we have a whole section of illegal parallel fifths in the bridge, too. The "Montuno"-section... Read more..
Ostinato I
The first of a series of music I have been working on. A piece drawing on serial music. The choice what to publish is quite difficult (once you get started with this kind of thing you will get hours and hours of music - and it's hard to decide what is good enough.) This one turned out quite satisfactory,... Read more..
Die Konzentrationslager Kantate
This is a part of music for a play by George Tabori, "Jubilee", written for a group of predominantly male voices with piano accompaniment. Before you start complaining about the lyrics, read up on what the play is about (and the person who wrote the lyrics). I am pretty happy how this turned out,... Read more..
Fouled Out
I recovered this piece from an old disk with sequencer tracks for my Yamaha SY99. It must be a piece from 1996, because  I was writing for sextet with Baritone at that time. The title was also on the disk, but I can't remember what it stands for. I had probably watched an NBA-game (San Antonio Spurs)... Read more..

Random Content: Arrangements

Ja Zuster, Nee Zuster
This is a song by the late Harry Bannink, with lyrics by the great Annie M. G. Schmidt. It is a straightforward arrangement for a group of voices with piano. This is part of the MuziekAtelier projects. See the related content box for more. Read more..
Cantaloupe Island
This is an arrangement of the Herbie Hancock piece. Actually, most of it is just a transcription of the recording on the 1964 "Empyrean Isles" album, with a few quirks. I have noticed many players playing, for instance, a D7-chord on what I call the B-section, which is just plain wrong. For more on that,... Read more..
Krezip - I Would Stay
Right, I absolutely loathe this song and the band/singer. Why? Well, apart from the rather bad harmonies in the backing vocals, the singer is off-key, sings blue notes when not appropriate (on a minor chord), and, worst of all, the rhythm is botched up. Note how I need to place "slower" and "faster"... Read more..
Quien Sera
We used this in a project as accompaniment to voice, but it is a full lead sheet and can be used accordingly. This is part of the "muziekatelier" project. To find more, search for the keyword or see the related articles. Read more..
Er Is Een Land
This is an arrangement of a Dutch song by Ruud Bos, with beautiful lyrics by Joke Smit. It is set for 3 to 4 female voices, with 1 or 2 male voices for the lowest part. This was made as part of a senior citizen's project by "Kunst in de Wijken" for the Dutch town Delft. Read more..

So What (Intro)
There are tons of transcriptions of "So What," the Miles Davis composition, and especially of the original 1958 recording. I've never seen the rubato intro transcribed, though, so here it is. Of course, the rhythmic notation is approximate, so listen to the recording (again!) for the timing. Read more..
Evans - Epilogue
A transcription of the original version of this Bill Evans tune. For another version of this song, see the Related Articles box. Read more..
Evans - Autumn Leaves
This is track 2 of the Bill Evans album "Portrait In Jazz," with the great Scott LaFaro on bass, who died soon afterwards. On the CD there is an extra track with a monaural version of this song, which I will upload here if I can find it. Read more..
Evans - Epilogue (Everybody Digs)
The Bill Evans piece from the "Everybody Digs Bill Evans" album. See the related articles for a transcription of another version of this song from an earlier recording. Read more..
Marley - Waiting In Vain
This is not a jazz solo, but I have used this in improvising lessons, and recently I found it again. There are many interesting techniques and notes Marley uses here, like blues scale, pentatonic motifs and different guitar tricks, all in a very short solo that is built well enough to sound like it was...
