On November 29 we had the last workshop of the year with members of the MuziekAtelier, and this time it was open for the public to participate and enjoy singing a few well-known songs with us.
Read more..Buddy Shank played a rare alto flute solo on the the Mamas and the Papas single "California Dreamin'." I needed it for a project, so here it is if you need it. Note that the key is different from the original and there are very minor changes to keep it more simple. There is nothing remarkable about this solo, although the flat tenth used on the dominant might surprise a few people in the pop scene. The rest of the solo is built on natural and harmonic minor, with use of a blue note here and there.
Read more..This is a simple arrangement of the well-known song by the Mamas and the Papas, in lead-sheet form, for use in the MuziekAtelier-projects. There are some slight differences in chords and rhythm, and the key (Ami) is different from the original.

This is a part of music for a play by George Tabori, "Jubilee", written for a group of predominantly male voices with piano accompaniment. Before you start complaining about the lyrics, read up on what the play is about (and the person who wrote the lyrics). I am pretty happy how this turned out,... Read more..
This is the first piece of my Persian Classical Music fusion project I finished. Persian music (like Indian music, etcetera) has a lot in common with jazz, but the main difficulty is the use of quarter-tones. I have employed blues techniques, power chords and such things to be able to write music... Read more..
The name says it all, a song for a girl. I leave the pondering about the implications of the bitter-sweet memory to you - it's more fun that way. I once had the incredible luck of playing this piece with Gary Peacock (we played one set, and this was the last tune we played,) and he thought it was... Read more..
I wrote this piece a very long time ago for a friend of a friend who had this wonderful sad small after a personal tragedy. The setting is very simple so she would be able to play it, and the difficult things in it (like the quintuplets) can be played with a lot of rubato to mask under-developed... Read more..
The number three is well represented in this song. It has three lead instruments playing three permutations of the same melody. It's a waltz (three beats per measure) and the lead-motif is repeated three times per line before turning around. The harmony is built on parallel perfect fourths, which... Read more..

This is a song from the Dutch musical "Joe," for which I needed a solo-piano arrangement. I have noticed there is demand for lead sheets and the like for (Dutch) musicials, so here it is, should you need it. Part of the "muziekatelier" project. To find more, search for the keyword or see the related... Read more..
You've Got A Friend: a beautiful song by Carole King, made famous the same year she did the song by James Taylor. This is an arrangement which is pretty close to the original, but with some twists. I've kept the surprising sequence at the end of the intro. Make sure you listen to Carole's version as... Read more..
This is a beautiful Dutch song, originally by Toon Hermans, but there is a beautiful version by Mathilde Santing. I needed this for a project, so here it is if you need it, too. This is part of the "muziekatelier" project. To find more, search for the keyword or see the related articles. Read more..
This is an arrangement of the Herbie Hancock piece. Actually, most of it is just a transcription of the recording on the 1964 "Empyrean Isles" album, with a few quirks. I have noticed many players playing, for instance, a D7-chord on what I call the B-section, which is just plain wrong. For more on that,... Read more..
This is a piano accompaniment for "Laat Me Niet Alleen," the Dutch version of "Ne Me Quitte Pas." Obviously, it can also be used for the original version. This is part of the "muziekatelier" project. To find more, search for the keyword or see the related articles. Read more..

Here's the great solo Davis played on the album "Kind of Blue." Every jazz musician can sing every solo on this album. Just ask them to, you will see. It is also often quoted, for instance by branford Marsalis, who wrote a piece with the exact same chords and form. Read more..
This is track 2 of the Bill Evans album "Portrait In Jazz," with the great Scott LaFaro on bass, who died soon afterwards. On the CD there is an extra track with a monaural version of this song, which I will upload here if I can find it. Read more..
This is not a jazz solo, but I have used this in improvising lessons, and recently I found it again. There are many interesting techniques and notes Marley uses here, like blues scale, pentatonic motifs and different guitar tricks, all in a very short solo that is built well enough to sound like it was...
